The Hangar is a level that first appeared in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2. It later reappears in Tony Hawk's Underground as an unlockable level, as well as in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD as a normal career level.

Origin[]

The Hangar is set in "Mullet Falls, Montana", which is a fictional location, known to be the reference to Joel Jewett's hair style. Despite the level itself not revealing any real world location and being designed like a training level (much like Warehouse from the previous game), the level preview indicates that the level draws inspiration from the Hangar 9 WWI memorial located in Brooks, Texas. It's possible the overall level theme is based on aircraft museums in the area (this includes a plane, a helicopter and various banners, referencing US air forces). GBA version relocated it to Meacham Field, Texas, which is the name of an airport located in Fort Worth, Texas.

Unlockable areas[]

  • An outdoor Helipad area can be accessed by grinding the Helicopter located at the far end of the room.
  • A Wind Tunnel area can be accessed by grinding the propeller located on the wall at the end of the half-pipe.

Multiplayer layout (THPS2)[]

All of the glass is gone (save for towards the ceiling) in the window separating the two rooms, and it isn't snowing outside.

Trivia[]

  • Neversoft's president, Joel Jewett, is from Great Falls, Montana, and he had a mullet back when THPS2 was in production; these both served as inspiration for this level.
  • Just like in Warehouse, the ceiling fades to pitch black in this level. PC port reveals that the original model lacks any roof (but it was added later on the Xbox). It's especially amusing during the helicopter liftoff sequence, since roof debris are spawning in the void.
  • You can hear wolves howling outside.
  • Snow is represented by just a few polygons and a scrolling texture on PSX. This is improved in Treyarch ports.
  • The level will often glitch to hide specific areas if the player crosses the middle wall in certain ways.
  • With a ramp that goes down into the level and a halfpipe you can jump across, this level is similar to the Warehouse.
  • In the THPS2X version, "Officer Dick" can be seen making an appearance standing inside a small room operating the Wind Tunnel. This room can be stalled on to get a better view.
  • In the GBA version, the way to access the Secret Tape was changed quite significantly. It is still behind the door that would lead to the outdoor helipad, but the Wind Tunnel area actually replaces it, and you open it like you would the Wind Tunnel normally. It is above the transfer where you enter the tunnel.
  • The Control room from THPS2x did not appear in THUG, but still returned in THPSHD.
  • THUG version of the level is a weird mix of original lower poly mesh and THPS2x textures. Also it is significantly darker than the original.
  • In the THPS1+2 version, there is a homage to Neversoft and the Tony Hawk games developed by them in from of huge banners for every title. Bam Margera was noticeably removed from THUG2 banner. This was possibly due to licensing issues or Bam's personal issues at the time of the game's release.
  • In Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2X the plane outside appears to be based off a Delta McDonnell Douglas DC-9, while in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD, its based off a Boeing 747. No planes are found outside in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, Tony Hawk's Underground, or Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2.
  • The fighter jet in the middle of the level is likely based off Vought F4U Corsair model.

Early content[]

  • In the early beta Hangar was located in Tajikistan.
  • During the development, it was planned to implement a secret control tower where random dispatcher chatter would be played just like later in THPS3 in Airport and Cruise Ship levels. It was possibly meant to be the room above the current helipad as can be seen in the E3 Demo. The other PC demo version of the game contained recorded audio files, but they did not make it to the final game. However, the Control Tower itself was moved to the starting point and appeared in THPS2X.
  • The wind tunnel propeller was originally meant to kill the player; this was removed from the game because it might have exceeded the criteria for a "T" rating.
