Vehicles are machines used to transport people or cargo.

Appearance[]

Vehicles were present in Tony Hawk's franchise since the very beginning. There are various ways vehicles are used in the series:

  • Non-interactive background part of the scenery (Burnside parking lot, Venice plane, cruise ship in Skater Island, boats in Vancouver)
  • Stationary part of the scenery serving as a trick object (Warehouse taxi, Hangar plane, San Francisco police cars)
  • Moving obstacle that may hit the skater and force them to bail. It usually follows a certain predictable pattern (New York trains, Philadelphia buses)
  • Teleport between areas (bus in THAW)
  • Controllable vehicle (cars in THUG, character specific vehicles in THUG2)

Original games would use vehicles to populate the scenery, much like the iconic taxi in Warehouse level. Just a few levels featured moving vehicles. There were basically 2 types of interaction with the vehicles at this point: if skater touches any vehicle on the ground - it bails them. Taxi cab drivers would also yell at skater for doing so. However, landing on top of the moving vehicle would give skater and extra bump, trigger the Boneless animation and add a trick called Car Plant to the trick queue.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 generally follows these rules, except now vehicles are able to brake if skater is in the way. If skater touches a vehicle that is staying in place, he won't bail. Also, a basic semaphore system was implemented for Los Angeles level.

In Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 approach to vehicles was drastically reimagined. Now cars have no option to bail skater at all. Even more, the skater can stay on the car now and travel around the level. It is also possible to perform grind tricks on moving vehicles. In addition to this, the Skitchin move was introduced to represent dangerous skate-hitching practice. It allows to hold onto the vehicle and gain additional speed beyond the average limits.

Tony Hawk's Underground introduced controllable vehicles, available in certain missions, which was a rather controversial feature since the environment obviously wasn't designed for high speed driving.

Some skaters in Tony Hawk's Underground 2 use unique vehicles, which also come with their own unique skating tricks.

Being an "open-world" game, Tony Hawk's American Wasteland added a bus to fast travel between the areas.
