Comepetition is a single player game type in THPS games.

Rules[]

  • Each run is 1 minute.
  • Skaters get 3 runs.
  • Bails hurt scores.
  • For each run, 5 judges will give their scores; average run score is calculated discarding lowest and highest judge score.
  • The sum of the 2 best run scores is the final score.
  • Top 3 skaters are awarded with medals.

Usage in games[]

In THPS-THPS3, 3 of the levels in each game's Career Mode are competitions. Competition levels have only 1 aim-place in the top 3 for a medal, which unlocks the next level. Earning gold medals in each competition level unlocks a video for the selected skater. Landing large combos, using special tricks whenever possible, mixing up your tricks, and trying not to bail (or do so as little as possible if unavoidable) in order to rack up a large score will influence the judges and result in better scores.

Competitions work mostly the same way in THPS2 and THPS3; however collectible items such as money, stat points, or decks are required to 100% the level.

In THPS4, each career level has a competition goal, ranging from street, vert, high combo, and flatland. Should the player leave the designated competition area, their score is not counted and their combo is dropped upon reentering.

In THUG, competitions like the Tampa AM and the Slam City Jam play an integral part of the story line. Skater peds also make appearances in the Tampa AM competition in the first round.

Although some classic competition levels (such as Chicago and Marseille) appear in Classic Mode for THUG2 and THAW, they are not competition stages.

Trivia[]

  • Each competition has a certain score cap that will result in 99.9 if the player will gain more. It never exceeds 200,000 in the first games of the series.
  • It is only required to play 2 runs to acquire the medal, the third run can be discarded.
  • Competitions includes crowd reactions to various events. Player will be cheered for successful combos and booed/mocked for bailing.
  • Player's opponents are the THPS professional skaters. Skater type is not counted, so you can easily see Rodney Mullen (street) and Tony Hawk (vert) in the same competition list.
  • In Skater Island, other pro skaters can be seen while your score/place are counted during a run.
    • Rodney Mullen can either be seen bailing, mounting his board, or doing a Casper across the screen.
    • Chad Muska is seen standing on one of the upper hips.
    • Elissa Steamer can be seen speeding up to do an ollie, riding away, or doing a manual across the screen.
    • Kareem Campbell can either be seen doing a handstand or bailing.
    • Bam Margera can either be seen bailing off of a rail behind Muska, doing a Lazy-Ass Manual, doing a Truckstand, or speeding up to do an ollie.
      • However, the last 2 (as Bam) are only seen during the competition rules cutscene.
